Back to Los Angeles….

January 29, 2010

I made it back to Los Angeles just in time to enjoy some of the torrential downpours that I usually associate with the EAST coast. Fun times!

And just like that, I got back into the swing of things.

Last Thursday I attended a SmugMug LA meeting, my first. I pretty much floated my car down Ventura Blvd. to the venue, but I got there in one piece. (The flooded streets down here looked more like São Paulo than Los Angeles). Jim Brammer was speaking on marketing. Like anything we see or hear, we should take it all in, digest it, then sort through what we need or don’t need. The good thing is, some of what he was saying echoed ideas that I’ve read in two GREAT books, VisionMongers – Making a Life and a Living in Photography and The Art of Start. Other things countered as well, but again, we take what we need, then leave the rest on the table.

The following night I found myself at Loft 4300 to photograph a “Pancakes and Booze” event. It is a monthly event that this gallery holds. Artist Nicole Palmquist, creator of www.booleep.com was asked to paint one of her pieces on a nude model. She had hired me to photograph/document the event for her. It was a great night! There was lots of great work on the walls, pancakes were served all night long, and I especially enjoyed being able to see all of the steps Nicole had to take to get to her final product. Images will be up soon, but I believe I have some censoring to do before I can post them online.

In the meantime, I’m sifting through my images from Brasília, VERY eager to get them online to share, as well as working with liveBooks on my new website. I also have a few meetings set up next week with architects. Already busy!

Hope everyone is well and I look forward to posting some images for you all very soon.

Pennywise!

November 10, 2009

When I was in 6th grade, 12 years old, I got a cassette tape in China Town in Philadelphia of a band called Pennywise… A year later I saw them in concert for the first time, oddly enough only a few blocks from where I originally got the tape. I was hooked!!!

Fast forward 16 years, they are still the top of my list of favorite bands, but just two weeks before I moved to LA, the singer quit the band!!!

No worries, because the rest of the band has forged forward!

After a recent APA meeting, I found myself at the Air Conditioned Supper Club where they played a show, vocals were filled in by Zoli, singer of the band Ignite.

Since I’m a complete geek for Pennywise, and since my friend is their web guy who I’m always happy to help, I got to work and shot some images of the gig! Enjoy, and please contact me if you are interested in usage and licensing. 415.509.7407 – jess@jessreynolds.com

Every Saturday after 5PM the Getty Center in Los Angeles is free, so I decided to swing by.

Not only was it free, but it is a gorgeous building in a gorgeous landscape, at a gorgeous time of day! How could I resist?! Here are just a few pictures from the day. I look forward to visiting several more times until I know this building as well as I got to know the DeYoung in San Francisco!!

auf Wiedersehen!

June 23, 2009

These next few months are going to bring about much excitement!!

From now until July 7th, I will be wrapping up the end of a five and half year stint of living in San Francisco. Having originally moved here from the small borough of Folsom, NJ, I attended school at the Academy of Art University for Advertising Photography, where I graduated as a valedictorian nominee. What a great city to go to school in! San Francisco is welcoming of everyone and everything, and really gave me the opportunity to grow and discover who I am, both personally and creatively, without having to worry about anyone passing judgement.

After graduation, I took a job with Apple Inc. as a Creative which, to be honest, I couldn’t resist. A great company, with great products, and great people. After only a year, however, I was really missing photography. So I said my goodbyes to Apple, and started up my business… …right in the middle of a recession!

Work in San Francisco has been pretty slow, for both myself and my film-producer boyfriend, Marcelo Eid. As a result, we decided to try a new city! Off to Los Angeles we go…

But first, three weeks in France! 10 days in Paris, 10 days in the south of France…. Suffice it to say, I’m exhilarated for the opportunity and feel extremely fortunate. I’m also eager to photograph like crazy to expand my portfolio! This trip will certainly justify updating my website.

After France, two weeks in New Jersey… Catch a couple of shows from my alumni drum corps, the Cadets, spend some quality time with family, and enjoy some water ice on the Jersey Shore!

However, as relaxing as the upcoming weeks sound, as soon as I’m back to California, I’m going to be in a new city with not many contacts, which will catapult me into working double time!! Lots of phone calls, lots of meetings, lots of challenges… All of which I am very excited about meeting head on and starting a new career in the South of California!

Hope everyone is well… Now I’m off to put some things for sale on Craigslist. Anyone interested in an iPhone 2G? (:
